What is LGBT?
LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. It can also be initialized as GLBT. This term is the adaptation of the term LGB that were used to replace the term gay because activists believed that the term gay is not accurate for the people whom they are referring to. So it came in existence since 1990. This term LGBT became adapted in mainstream under a term called umbrella term. The term LGBTQ is an advocated term which is used by The Association of LGBTQ Journalists when such lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender sexual orientation is described. In LGBTQ, Q stands for queer or are questioning their sexual identity. LGBTQ term came into existence since 1996. When the intersex term is added it stands to LGBTI.History of LGBT
The term "homosexual" is a very common term but originally carried negative connotations. So it was changed to homophile in around 1950s or 1960s and the term "gay" introduced around 1970s. Lesbian is being more identified in the society the term gay and lesbian became more common.The political interest in the topic of feminism or gay rights led to the dissolution of some organization that includes Daughters of Bilitis which was the first lesbian civil and political rights organization in the United States. The activists began to use the term LGBT in the US from around 1988. Until the 1990s the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender did not gain any sexual equality. Although in the LGBT community this term gets a more positive impact. The variants that are categorized in LGBT are lesbian, gay, Transgender inclusion, Intersex inclusion.
The positive impact of LGBT
This is considered to be negative connotations but there are studies that show its positive impact. studies showed that Organisations and businesses which have LGBT as its senior position or as its leaders reported to have a higher performance rate. Marquette University from the US performed a case study to see if companies have lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender as employees (LGBT) in senior management roles and what impact did it have on the overall performance on the growth of the company. It has been reported that around 61 percent of the participating companies have one more LGBT persons in a top leadership position.
Its been noticed that 48 percent had one or more people of color and 86 percent had one or more women in a top leadership role, said Jennica Webster, an associate professor at Marquette University. “Having LGBT people in leadership positions, whether it as a CEO, a business owner, a part of senior management or on the Board of Directors, is good for a business’ bottom line,” said Jason Rae, President & CEO of the Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce, which commissioned the study. Rae said, “Simply put, diversity is good for business."
“Overall, organizations with one or more LGBT people in senior leadership positions perform better than other organizations,” Rae said. “This study helps reinforce our commitment to helping ‘break the rainbow ceiling’ and get more LGBT people in senior leadership roles. When LGBT people are present in leadership roles, businesses do better,” he added.
LGBT in India - section 377 or article 377
Section 377, IPC reads as: “377. Unnatural offences.—Whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal, shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable to fine."
Dated 6/9/2018, our honorable supreme court declared decriminalized part of Section 377, Indian Penal Code. Gay sex is stated as irrational, indefensible and manifestly arbitrary. In India gay rights became legal and this became a new rage worldwide. The protest finally showed its color for LGBT people. LGBT became a part of our Indian culture now.
